At the PGSA Fall Conference last October, member Ted Dzieciatkowski approached me with a suggestion for an article. He asked, "Why don't you do something on Polish bookstores?" It's one of those things so blindingly obvious that it had never occurred to me before. I told him I'd give it a try, and that's how this article started.

The first question is, what do we mean by "Polish bookstores"? A Web search for those terms turns up firms that sell books in Polish on, say, advanced math, or the subtleties of palatalization in Western vs. Eastern Slavic languages. I suspect that's not exactly what our readers would have in mind. So it makes sense to concentrate first of all on vendors who sell books offering information useful in Polish genealogical research.

Such a list, however, must go beyond just genealogy. If feedback from you, our members, tells us anything, it tells us you understand there's more to research than charts full of names and dates, essential as those may be. Books providing insight on the history and culture of Poland and Polonia can clear up all kinds of knotty mysteries you encounter in your research, even if the word "genealogy" is nowhere in them. So this list includes many sources of books that deal with Polish history, culture, etc. In fact, a listing of sources exclusively for Polish genealogy would be pretty short: Genealogical Publishing Company (the publisher of Rosemary Chorzempa's Polish Roots), the PGSA and other Polish Genealogical Societies around the world, and not much more.

While my main source of information was the Internet, I've tried not to concentrate on virtual bookstores such as Amazon.com and chains such as Barnes & Nobles. Granted, a search of their catalogs uncovers books hard to find for individuals, but readily available at reasonable rates through them. But I suspect many of our members love the experience of going into a specialty store full of lesser-known books and just browsing. So most of the firms mentioned actually have street addresses as well as Websites. If you can visit them in the flesh, do so. If not, the Web is not a bad alternative.

So this list focuses on book vendors and publishers, in North America and to a lesser extent in Poland, that can sell you a respectable array of titles dealing either with genealogy, or with related subjects that may shed light on genealogy. I've tried to include all I could find and think of, but I'm sure I've missed many, many good ones. Please, if you know of one not mentioned here, don't hesitate to write and tell me of it. I'd love to do a follow-up article that provides more information than appears here.

In the interest of accuracy I must add that the Society cannot vouch for these organizations; we can only pass on information you may find helpful-but as always, let the buyer beware! Obviously I couldn't visit all these stores in person, so I have relied largely on information given on their Websites, on any personal knowledge I happened to have about them, and on suggestions from folks who knew of a store they'd recommend?my sincere thanks to all who wrote. This kind of information has a very short shelf life; it needs constant updating. But as we went to press all the links and information given here was correct, so far as I could determine.

I hope some of this information will prove helpful to you. Just remember: these sources don't all offer books on genealogy, but may help you find titles that will assist you with your research.

If you happen to be in Poland, Robert Oldowski (Email: oldowski@juno.com) wrote of a great map store in Warsaw, located about a 15-minute walk southeast of the Warsaw Central Train Station. "They have maps of areas throughout Poland. The store has a small master map of Poland marked off showing what area each detail map covers, from which you can order. You should have a pretty precise idea of what sections you want. I found one or two people who spoke a little English.

"The finest detail in stock was 1:25,000 scale. At this scale, each map covers a grid 10 km by 16 km (6 by 10 miles), and is 19 by 31 inches in size. The maps I bought were produced in the 1980's. Each is in color, topographical, and shows the terrain, the roads and such, the names of all the communities in the area, even specks representing houses and farms in the rural areas. Each map cost 3 zloty, which is about $1.
