DNA – Polish Project

The Polish Project for Family Tree DNA Customers: A “Home” for Polish-Americans Tracing Their Ancestry Through DNA.

Lawrence G. Mayka, M.S.

Although genetic genealogy through DNA testing has been commercially available for at least 6 years, only more recently have increasing numbers of Polish-Americans begun to discover its value, both for verifying and extending family trees and for better understanding personal and national ancestral history. The Polish Project began at Family Tree DNA in 2005 mostly as a low-overhead way to offer Polish-Americans the company’s project discount. In June 2006, the project gained a full-time volunteer administrator and a web site. Since then, the project has accelerated rapidly, growing sevenfold in participants, garnering substantial attention from professionals in the field, and becoming a model for other projects.
