The young teacher Maria, during a trip to the mountains, has an affair with the well-known Wiesław Borzęcki. The fruit of their time together is a child, but on the day she gives birth to a daughter, Krystyna, she learns that Wiesław is the husband of her friend, Elżbieta, who is childless. It is agreed Krystyna will live with her father. Years later, Maria decides to find Krystyna to regain her love. She does this at the price of social degradation – she becomes a cleaner at the school her daughter attends. Wiesław is killed in a car accident. Death also threatens little Krystna. At the child’s bed, Maria and Elżbieta reconcile in the best interests of the child.
